Chief’s Corner
By Chief Steven J. Wojnar Dudley Police Department Now that winter has officially arrived, it is challenging for drivers and pedestrians while out on the roads. Shorter periods of sunlight, along with snow and inclement weather, can make driving or walking dangerous. I was asked to provide some safety tips for pedestrians and bicyclists, to avoid accidents or injuries. It is important for pedestrians to remember to be as visible as possible. Carrying or using some form of a light, or wearing reflective materials, will aid in being seen as soon as possible. A cell phone flashlight can be a great tool to use. Try to wear bright clothing if possible and pay particular attention to your surroundings. The wearing of headphones or ear buds can reduce your ability to hear traffic, horns, or other sounds. If you use these devices, be sure to use them at a volume which enables you to hear what is happening around you. Pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible. If there are no sidewalks, walk along the road shoulder, as far out of the road as possible, facing traffic. By facing traffic, you will be able to see cars as they approach, and you will be able to take evasive measures if necessary. You will be able to make sure you can be seen by drivers as much as possible. Finally, if you are riding bicycles, only do so in the proper weather and road conditions. This time of year, a great deal of salt, sand, or debris can be on the roads which may cause a hazard. Riders must be aware of these circumstances. Bicycles must observe traffic laws, the same as vehicles. This includes travelling with the flow of traffic, observing stop signs and traffic signals, and turning at intersections. Many bike lanes have been added to roads in recent times, to improve safety. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists must share the road. Respect each other’s presence and take as many safety measures as you can. This will prevent accidents and injuries. |
