Chief’s Corner
By Chief Steven J. Wojnar Dudley Police Department I often receive questions about driver’s licenses or learner’s permits. Recently, I was asked to provide information on the process of changing one’s address on their license or registration. What is the process and how long does a person have to complete this? Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 26A is the law which outlines this process. According to this section, the registered owner must complete this process “within 30 days after the date on which any such change was made.” It also must be completed in “writing.” The notice can be completed in person, on-line, or via telephone. They previously allowed this transaction to occur via US Mail, however, this is not provided as an option any longer. The Registrar may also require some additional documentation to verify the information provided to them is true and accurate. You will also be required to provide some personal information, such as your Social Security. More information on completing this process can be found at https://www.mass.gov/how-to/change-your-address-with-the-rmv . Anyone found in violation of this section can have their license, registration, or learner’s permit revoked or suspended. The law does not specify the length of time for the suspension or revocation; however, any length of time is considered too long. Most of us have waited in Registry lines at one time or another and found it to be cumbersome. Having the ability to complete this transaction remotely, is a great convenience. |
Knowing this action can be completed easily certainly off sets any risk of penalties for a failure to do so. Please be sure to complete this process as soon as possible to prevent any penalties or inconvenience.
