Chief’s Corner
By Chief Steven J. Wojnar Dudley Police Department With spring here and summer around the corner, there will be many yard sales taking place in town. I was asked recently about the permit process and what people should consider when planning one of these events. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind people of what to do in these instances. Permits for yard sales are generally given at the Selectmen's office during normal business hours. When the Selectmen's office is closed, these can be granted through the Police Department. There is no fee associated with these permits at this time. Public safety is a main concern with the location of these yard sales. In areas where there is high traffic volume, accidents or injuries can take place when numerous vehicles are parked along the road and people are crossing streets or walking along the roadside. Vehicles parked in an unsafe manner can also hamper the vision of drivers traveling through these areas. Any sales or events taking place on public property require permission of the Selectmen. Article eight section 2 of the Town By-Laws states, "No person shall use any sidewalk, street, or property of the Town for display of merchandise or other articles of personal property without first obtaining written permission to do so from the Selectmen." Remember to keep in mind the safety aspect when hosting these sales. They are great opportunities to rid your home of excess property or make room for new things. |
Be sure to plan with safety in mind when organizing these events. Pay particular attention to the location where you choose to have them. Avoid corners or view obstructed locations and allow ample room for parking. Anyone with questions or concerns can contact our office for further information at 508-943-4411.
