Chief’s Corner
By Chief Steven J. Wojnar Dudley Police Department I was recently asked for information about motor vehicle inspection stickers. The person purchased a used vehicle in a private sale and wondered how much time there is before they must get the vehicle inspected? Also, if the vehicle already passed inspection under the prior owner, why can’t the new person simply wait until the sticker expires? In Massachusetts, all registered motor vehicles are subject to safety and emission standards inspections on an annual basis. Newly obtained vehicles must be inspected within seven days. Vehicles must pass these inspections to be eligible to operate on the road. All vehicles will have a month indicating the expiration date of the annual inspection. A new inspection must take place before the end of that month. If you go beyond the expiration date or drive outside an approved period, the penalty is a civil fine. Whenever a vehicle changes ownership, they are required to be inspected. The law specifically requires “newly acquired” vehicles to pass inspection. This applies to both new and used vehicles. It is in place mainly to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate. Most dealerships will provide this service as part of the vehicle purchase. If it is a private sale, you must get this done at an authorized inspection station. The laws are designed promote safety and to reduce pollution from vehicle exhausts. The investment in having your vehicle work properly is money well spent. It is certainly better to have everything in good condition rather than risking a crash or breakdown. |
